ZenPhone Custom iPhone firmware.

I made a custom firmware with the latest PWN Tool and am releasing it here for friends to download and use.

This is Apple Firmware 2.0.1

Its been Jailbroken - Not Un-Locked

This will only work for people that are AT&T subscribers. You will have to activate the phone in iTunes.

This includes a custom Boot Logo as shown in an earlier post. It has Cydia and Installer app both installed, and I added quite a few sources in Cydia. Winterboard is installed for themes. I left the main partition at 500mb.

Honestly I have not used installer much yet, its still in beta, but I put it on there anyways. I would stick with installing Apps from Cydia.

So here is how it works.

  • Download the file: ZenPhone Firmware
  • Open iTunes and plug in your iPhone - Make a current backup of all your stuff - SYNC!
  • Once you have a current sync and backup you can proceed with the dirty deed.

Put the iPhone in DUF mode. Here is how:

  • Turn off the iPhone. Leave the USB cord hooked up.
  • Hold the Power and Home buttons together for Exactly 10 seconds, then release the power button. remain holding the home button for another 10 seconds and iTunes will detect a phone in restore mode.

Now you can restore from iTunes.

  • For Mac users hold the Option key and select Restore.
  • Windows users its Shift+Restore

Your iPhone will reboot and have the Custom logo. Once loaded let iTunes Activate and Sync your apps and Data.

Now you are Jailbroken and have Cydia and Installer working as well as the App Store.

Re-Jailbreaking my iPhone

I spent some time re-jailbreaking my iPhone.

I had read all thise crap about the Ziphone method that I used when i got the phone. I am glad I wasn’t unlocking it, just jailbreaking or it could have really messed up my phone.

I dont see a need for me to use the new PWNage tool yet, maybe after FW 2.0 but for now i figured I would clean it off and use iLivertyX.

Cleaning it off seemed to be a little bit of a problem. iTunes gave me an Error 2025 a couple times but after a few tries I got it to restore the iPhone to its original state. I was back at a clean 1.1.4 It was locked all my apps and photos and music gone. :-) glad i backed those up!

I downloaded iLibertyX and updated all the payloads. The first time I figured I would go for the gust and install Cydia and Installer and have it move my ringtones and fonts, there wasn’t an option to move the applications, and I installed the big boss and crashX recommended. It went rather quick. The 2 stage process of iLiberty is nice compared to ZiPhone and it told me what it was doing along the way. Nice tool guys!

The iPhone rebooted and there is was in all its glory, my jailbroken iPhone. Woot! Cydia was on and some of the boss tools. There were a couple others i had not used so i tried them, not anything I wanted. Something i noticed is that because the Installer and Cydia had not installed these extra apps they were not listed ad being installed, so both Installer and Cydia cant see what is installed if they didn’t install them itself. This is going ot add to some confusion when installing apps. I tested this by installing an app that was listed in both Cydia and installer. First installed it with Cydia and Installer couldn’t see it, then removed it and installed it with Installer, this time the same thing Cydia couldn’t see it because it was installed by installer.

Next I installed Boss Tools - I wanted ot move the applications folder and the fonts because my Main boot partition was almost full already. Well this didn’t work well. Boss tools couldn’t move them, it would try then drop to home and nothing was moved. This was frustrating as space in that partition is so limited.

After these couple of things popped up I had a few other issues with some apps from installer, They were having the issues with BSD, and I know Cydia does its own deal with BSD.

I chose to restore again. Had a couple Error 2001 this time but after a few tries it restored to a fresh 1.1.4 again.

I ran iLibertyX again and just did the jailbreak and Installer version, did not add any extra payloads.

The iPhone was broken even faster this time, still 2 phases but fast. After a reboot i was all set.

Basic jailbreak and Installer in and that was it. So i installed BSD subsystem and then Boss Tools and Prefs. This time I moved the fonts and ringtones and applications. Freed up that little partition nicely - 140 MB of 300 free.

Now i have been messing with it over night and installed a bunch of the apps i wanted and didn’t bother on some of the ones I had tried and not liked.

This time I didn’t bother with Open SSH, instead i just put AFPd - this tool lets me brown the phone right from finder. Works great! I was able to upload the themes I had saves as well as some other crap. then turn it off and poof its gone from finder. Smoooooth!

Thats what it looks like at the moment.

I’ll be installing categories in a bit then get back to changing the themes.

Cydia now on.

I installed Cydia Packager last night.

This is another package installed similar to that of Installer.app but it does things differently.

First its an 11mb download, so I say do it on WiFi, that would take a while over Edge for sure. Once downloaded it starts installing itself. This program replaces the BSD subsystem that we all installed with Installer. They say its a lot better and more secure than the BSD system that was being used. So it replaces it. I heard the install would take a while but it was only about 3 min on my iPhone.

After installing its looking good. it started and ran just fine. I updated some of the repositories and there came all the apps. a lot of the same ones that are in installer.

Cydia really is a lot faster than Installer and I like that. This will be the main place I get apps unless I have to get them from installer… One of the only downfalls from Cydia at the moment is you can not add your own repositories, so if I want something from one thats not installed I will have to used Installer, but thats ok for now.

I am kinda wondering if im getting too much crap on my phone or something, It seems a little sluggish. I have installed and removed so many apps that maybe there are some left overs that are getting in the way.

I think on sunday I am going to restore to the factory settings then use iLibertyX or PWNage to re-jailbreak the sucker and get rid of that ZiPhone crapware that I used the first time. I just gotta pull off all my custom icons and crap i have loaded first….. We shall see how that goes, and maybe ill make a video of the process… :-)
